VOCATIONAL TRAINING:
In addition to the formal education upto the 12th level, the students are also trained in traditional crafts like cloth weaving, candle making and re-caning of chairs. To acquaint the children with the modern technology and to keep them abreast of the times, the students are trained in Braille Stenography in all the three languages English, Hindi & Punjabi. They are also given computer literacy training through screen reading softwares. Girl students are also trained in stitching, knitting, cookery and embroidery etc.
ORIENTATION & MOBILITY TRAINING:
Mobility plays an important and vital role in the growth and functioning of a visually impaired person. The blind students have mainly posture and gait problems. To overcome these problems, the students need physical exercise and mobility training. Mr. D. P. Pathak Warden of the Institute, a trained and experienced mobility-training instructor, has been imparting outdoor mobility training to 5/6 blind students daily in the afternoon. Mrs. Shanta Malhotra Matron of the Institute, who has recently got six months training as Mobility Instructor from NIVH Dehradun, is also giving mobility training to the blind girl students in the afternoon. The students are regularly using long-canes for their physical safety when moving outside the premises of the Institute .
COMPUTER LITERACY TRAINING:
Basic Computer Literacy Training is also imparted. Institute has Six talking computer systems equipped with a special Screen Reading Software ‘JAWS’. Besides additional 12 computers have been donated by Dell India Pvt. Ltd., which form part of the computer training centre. We also have Dolphin Super Nova Screen Reading Software installed in our Computers which besides reading the script on the screen alswo magnifies the images, which is used for low-vision students. Recently Punjab School Education Board has added computer education as an additional subject in the syllabus. We now have a full time computer instructor to impart training to the students from class 6th onwards.
MUSIC TRAINING:
Music is very important integral part of the syllabi and curricula in this Institute. This subject is essential from academic, vocational, cultural and extra-curricular aspect. Instruction in the subjects of Music Instrumental, Vocal, and Tabla are imparted by highly qualified, trained and experienced teachers.
Music is one of the compulsory subjects in all the classes. Besides academics, this subject is very useful for our students as a vocation. Many of our students are employed in Govt. and Semi-Govt. Organisations as Music Teachers, Tabla Instructors, Guitar player and Sitar Artists.
Several times our school teams participate in national and regional festivals and functions related to the religions, cultural and national heritage namely Independence Day, Republic Day, Ganesh Utsava, Malyalam/Banga/Durga Pooja; Christmas Day Celebrations, Gurpurbs, Id etc. They present devotional songs and other musical items and win trophies, mementos and prizes and are encouraged with incentives in cash and kind. Two of our students also bagged Lata Nite and Rafi Nite awards on the basis of their excellent performance in the northern region. Thus music is the subject which enables our students to bring laurels and appreciation to the Institute.
STENOGRAPHY IN BRAILLE AND ENGLISH, HINDI & PUNJABI TYPEWRITING:
The visually impaired students of this Institute are provided training in English, Punjabi & Hindi Typewriting. Students of senior classes are given training in Stenography in Braille script by Miss. Kiran Kumari, Work Experience Teacher of this Institute. Training in Braille Codes is also provided to the students.
